In 1901, James Toon, 11 (along with his brothers, William Toon, 9, and Thomas Toon, 10) arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 102 children en route to the Middlemore home in Halifax.

On June 26, 1918, in St. John, New Brunswick, James Toon was Drafted into the Canadian Armed Forces (Service No. 2013469; No. 4 M, Engineer Training Depot Battalion, Quebec Regiment). He declared that he resided at Durham Bridge, York, New Brunswick, Canada; that his date of birth was January 23, 1889; that he was born in Burslem, England; that he was not married; that he was a member of the Church of England; that his trade was in bridge construction; that his next of kin was his father, Henry Toon, who resided at 4 Osbourne Street, Leister, England. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; brown eyes; brown hair.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers states that Sapper Toon died aboard the H.M.T. Pamonia (Likely a type for Pomona) at Liverpool, Merseyside, England of Pneumonia. Death Due to Service. Burial at Kirkdale Cemetery, Liverpool, Merseyside, England. Plot: VI. C.E. 116.

Canadian Virtual War Memorial notes that James was the son of Henry and Sarah Toon, of Leicester, England.
