NotesA birth registration was found for Henry Brown: Year of Registration: 1891; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: Chorlton; County: Lancashire; Volume: 8c; Page: 932. Parents: Henry Brown and Mary Daley, married March quarter 1878, Bolton, Lancashire, England.

In 1903, Henry Brown, 11, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 54 Middlemore children en route to Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

According to his granddaughter, Shelley Vercillo, Henry Brown jumped a sailing ship when World War I broke out, working for his passage to England where he joined the Army as a farrier and possibly served in the artillery. While in service, he developed trench mouth and lost all of his teeth. He also had pneumonia and was hospitalized with that. Henry was awarded with several medals, all of which were unfortunately stolen after his return to Canada at the war's end. He also received a Burnt pension.

In his later years, he was asked to travel back to England to obtain a medal from the queen given to the last few remaining men alive who served in the British military during World War I. These soldiers were known as the "Old Contemptibles" (probably the 1914 Star, also known as the Mons Star.) The title was proudly adopted by the men of the BEF who saw service before 22nd November 1914. They were the originals, and most were regular soldiers or reservists. They derive their honourable title from the famous "Order of the Day" given by Kaiser Wilhelm II at his headquarters in Aix-la-Chapelle on the 19th August, 1914:- "It is my Royal and Imperial Command that you concentrate your energies, for the immediate present upon one single purpose, and that is that you address all your skill and all the valour of my soldiers to exterminate first the treacherous English; walk over General French's contemptible little Army." The precise translation has been debated endlessly, but the irony of the choice of title is clear."

Henry Brown belonged to The Royal Canadian Legion, his legion number was 12370557.
