NotesMary (my great aunt) was one of 4 children born to unwed parents and placed in Quarriers care. Three siblings were placed in 1881 (the year of Mary's birth)and sent to Canada in 1884. Mary was abandoned by her mother, but cared for by her grandmother until 1884. According to Quarrier's records, the grandmother was deaf and not well. Physically and financially she could not continue to care for the child. The mother, now married, said "send her to Canada with her siblings", so Mary too was placed with Quarriers in 1884, arriving in Canada in 1891.

I have not been able to find Mary's placement. In fact, I did not know of her existance until I located the grand daughter of Mary's sister, Anne, who kept referring to "Grandma's sister". I thought she was speaking of my Grandmother, Susan Cook, and was quite surprised to find she was speaking of Mary, who I was unaware of. Searching Archives, Mary was located, and Quarriers contacted who provided the above information.

At some point Mary went to work as a domestic in Chambley, Quebec in the home of Henry and Victoria Burland. Several years later, Victoria died and Henry and Mary were married. They had two children who at this time are both living (2008). I had provided a copy of my family search to Mary's cousin in Smith Falls. She in turn copied it, and forwarded same to her cousin in British Columbia, a grand daughter of Mary's. This grand daughter phoned me, and via that connection I have learned of Mary's Canadian history and received pictures of her and her family.

Mary died in March of 1969 and is buried in St.Stephen's Angelican Church Cemetery, Chambley, Quebec.
