NotesParents: William Henry Cowell and Elizabeth Watson, who married June 18, 1876 at the Parish Church, Kirk Braddan, Isle Of Man.

Elizabeth Watson Cowell died on July 3, 1890, in Nobles Hospital, Douglas, Isle Of Man.

In 1891, Alfred Cowell, 9, was shown as a lodger at 2 Bigwell Street, Conchan, Douglas, Isle of Man, along with his father, William Cowell, 41, widower, general labourer. (Source: 1891 Isle of Man Census; Class: RG12; Piece: 4687; Folio 89; Page 12; GSU roll: 6099797.)

In 1892, Alfred Cowell, 10 (along with his brother, William Ambrose Cowell, 13), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 130 Quarrier children en route to the Fairknowe Home in Brockville, Ontario, Canada.

Alfred Cowell returned to the Isle of Man.

In December, 1907, Alfred Cowell, 24 years, 8 months, farm labourer, enlisted in the British Armed Forces with the Royal Immesthilling Fusiliers. He was described as 5 foot 6-1/2 inches in height; dark complexion; light hazel eyes; dark hair. He had seven scars on his back; circular scar on his chest about 2" above his navel; and one ditto 2" from left of same. Alfred Cowell was promoted to Sargent on August 5, 1914, and sent to France. He was reported missing on August 24, 1914. He was reported as a Prisoner of War in West Germany on June 9, 1915. Alfred Cowell was repatriated in Switzerland on September 11, 1917 and discharged from service on May 27, 1918.

On February 1, 1912, in Dublin, Ireland, Alfred Cowell married Mabel McCamliss. They had one child: Muriel R. Cowell, born October 13, 1914, who died on August 5, 1915, in Dublin, Ireland.
