David Donaldson,91....David Donaldson,91, along time resident of Fairfield, died June 11 at Maple View Lodge, where he had lived since 2000.He was born February 25,1911 at Edinburgh,Scotland to James Donaldson and the former Mary Calder. His parents died before he was four years old and he lived with his uncle and aunt for some time. Then he went to live at the Quarrier home near Glasgow,Scotland,a home for orphans and the children of destitute parents. There he had a good if Spartan upbringing. In 1927 he came to Canada, stopped at he Fairknowe Home in Brockville, along with numerous other Quarrier children, and worked on several farms in the area, including Ashton, the sixth Concession of Elizabethtown,Nash Road and Fairfield. He had many tales both funny and sad to tell of those hard days. He also went to work in lumber camps in the winters and joined the grain harvests out west. While working for the Fairfield farmer,Harry Tristram,he first met Muriel Emma Pyke,of that hamlet, whom he eventually married on March 23,1940 in Christ Church,Gananoque.Mr.Donaldson worked at the Phillips Cables plant in Brockville from 1938-1945.He held a few odd jobs after that, then began helping to build the plant at the Maitland site of DuPont Canada Inc.On July 23,1953 he began working for DuPont Canada Inc,itself at the Maitland site. He worked there as a labourer until he retired in 1975. He was an active member of Manhard United Church and helped maintain the church building. He was also on the Manhard Cemetery board at one time and used to sing in the choir. He had played soccer in his younger years and was an avid sports fan all his life.He like to read and also enjoyed crafts such as leather work and weaving dollies. He lived for 60 years with his wife in their little home on the southwest cornor of North Augusta Road and Fairfield Road. He loved to work in the vegetable garden and mow his lawn, keeping it as neat and trim as a golf green.Friends called at the Barclay Funeral Home,Brockville, where on June 14 the funeral was held, with Pastor Linda Winton officiating.Burial follwed at Manhard Cemetery. The pallbearers were Raymond Slack,Victor Johnston,Austin Collet,Lorne Thompson, Albert Steenwyk and Arnie King.Memorial donations were directed to the Lung Association.
