In April, 1922, John Richard Boyns arrived at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. He declared that he was 18 years of age; that his intended occupation was farming; that he had no present occupation; that he intended to remain permanently in Canada; that he was destined to his employer, Mr. George M. Ford, Broadview, Saskatchewan; and that his next of kin was his brother, N. Boyns, who resided at One Saundry Terrace, Penzance, Cornwall, England.

Broadview Farmer Kills Wife First Then Himself

George Ford, Half Crazed by Taunts of Neighbors, Uses Shotgun--Had Been Ostracised for Death of Barnardo Boy Two Years Ago.

(Canadian Press Despatch.) Regina, Sask., Jan. 3.--Half crazed by the taunts of his neighbors, who called him 'batty,' and maddened by disagreements at home, George Ford, well-known farmer of Broadview district, shot his wife with a shotgun Saturday afternoon and then turned the gun on himself, blowing his brains out.

The first shooting took place in the living-room of the Ford farm house, six miles south of Broadview, at one o'clock in the afternoon. Ford entered the room, where his wife was reading a mail order house catalogue. He shot her twice in the back of the head. He then walked out of the house to the granary where he shot himself.

The only eye-witness to the murder was Seona Ford, a child of four years.

Ostracized for Neglect

Strangely linked up with a tragedy of more than two years ago is the double fatality of Saturday. The first chapter in the melodrama was written March 19, 1923, when John Richard Boyns, a Barnardo boy, employed by Ford, died of double pneumonia in the cellar of the farm house, where he lay on a cot during the period of his illness, without any medical attention.

At the inquest, held March 21, 1923, the jury gave a verdict that Boyns had died from double pneumonia, owing to wilful neglect on the part of Ford, his employer.

Ford was arraigned in the court of king's bench at Moosomin, Nov. 27, 1923, charged with crmiinal neglect. Although the case was withdrawn from the jury this did not end the matter.

News of the circumstances surrounding the death of young Boyns had been flashed across the continent and to the Old Country. A storm of indignation arose on every side and feeling against the Ford family was hot. In the Broadview district, where they farmed under the soldiers' settlement board, so intense was the anger of the people that Ford and his wife were practically ostracized.

NOT A BARNARDO BOY

REGINA, Jan. 16.--The Western agent of the Barnardo Homes has called attention of the Canadian Press to an error in a news dispatch carried on January 4 in which reference was made that John R. Boynes, mentioned in the Ford murder and suicide at Broadview, Sask., was a Barnardo boy. Investigation reveals, that Dr. Barnardo's Homes were in no matter connected with the immigration of Boynes.
