In 1901, James Newbold, 4 years of age, was residing at 13 Tarbet Street, Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England. Other family members included: Beatrice Newbold, 10; Eliza Newbold, 31; Jessie Newbold, 16; May Newbold, 17; Thomas Newbold, 39, labourer in ink dye works; Thomas Newbold, 9.

In 1910, James Newbold, 13, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 93 children en route to Knowlton, Quebec, Canada.

In 1911, James Newbold, 14, is shown as a domestic / farm labourer for William Fandy and family in Eardly, Wright, Quebec, Canada. His date of birth is shown as August 1896 and his immigration year as 1910.

On April 13, 1915, James Newbold enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Birmingham, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Jenie [Jessie] Newbold, who resided in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; that he was born August 20, 1896; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; and fair hair. He had a distinguishing feature of a wart in the toe of his foot. He was a member of the Church of England.

(Editor's Note: Jessie Newbold married Herbert Graham on July 16, 1915, at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Another sister seems to have immigrated with Jessie: Beatrice Newbold married John Peter Mercier on October 26, 1908, at Vancouver, British Columbia. No immigration information has been found for either of them, however, and no immigration information was found for any of the other children.)
