NotesA birth registration was found for Edward Mockford: Year of Registration: 1876; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: St Giles; County: London, Middlesex; Volume: 1b; Page: 593. (Parents: Abel John Mockford, a sweep, married Jane Dean at St Pancras Old Church, London on November 22, 1851. Both were minors and were living at Market Street, and according to the marriage certificate, both
?made their mark?.)

[EDITORS NOTE: It appeared that Abel John sometimes called himself John or Richard or Robert. One can?t help but wonder whether he had numerous brushes with the law which motivated these changes of identity.]

John Mockford aged 43, died on April 19, 1877 of consumption. He was buried in St Pancras Cemetery, London, England.

In the 1881 census, the family now headed by Jane Mockford, a charwoman, consisted of Charles, Louisa and Edward, all living at 21 Marchment Place, Bloomsbury. But five years later, Jane was to die of chronic bronchitis (death registration for Jane Mockford: Estimated Birth Year: abt 1834; Year of Registration: 1886; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; Age at Death: 52; District: Pancras (1837-1901); County: London, Middlesex; Volume: 1b; Page: 47)

Edward, then 10, was placed with Barnardos by his brother, Charles Mockford, and his sister, Mary Ann Crittall. The Barnardo Admission Report stated:

"Edward Mockford - Governor?s Report - Dr Barnardo?s Home for Boys

An application for the admission of the child was made by his sister, Mrs Crittall, of 61 Pembroke St., Caledonian Road N., and from her letter and our inquiries the following information has been obtained. The child is an orphan. His father, Robert Mockford, a sweep, died of consumption 10 years ago. The death of his mother, from chronic bronchitis, took place on the 11th January, 1886. The child was then taken by Mrs. Crittall, from whose letter the following is an excerpt, explanatory of her reason for applying to us:

My little brother is ten years of age. He is very delicate, very consumptive. He is never well because I cannot give him the proper food that he wants. I find I cannot do what I would like to do for him. I cannot clothe him as he wants to be clothed. If you would be so kind as to help I am sure I would be very much obliged, as I know he would be properly looked after and have proper food which I cannot give.

The usual agreement has been signed by the sister, Mrs. Crittall.
Relatives:
Brother - Charles Mockford (28) works at Day and Martin?s blacking factory and earns 1 (illegible) weekly. Lives in Queen?s Square, Ormond St. W.C.
Sisters - Mrs Crittall, wife of a coach builder, out of work, 61 Pembroke Street, Caledonian Road, and N. Louisa Mockford (16) servant in Judd Street, Euston Road - wages 2- weekly."

Edward Mockford travelled to Canada prior to 1891 as he is shown as a domestic to John and Martha Deavitt of Broadview, Assiniboia East, The Territories, Canada. He is shown to be 15 years of age.

Edward obtained a homestead entry on May 13, 1898, for North East quarter of Section 18, Township 16, Range 30, West of the 1st Meridian, Rural Municipality of Rocanville, Saskatchewan, Canada.

In 1901, Edward Mockford, 24, is shown as a domestic / farm labourer to William and Catherine Blyth of Ferndale, Assiniboia, The Territories, Canada. His date of birth is shown as March 20, 1877, and his immigration year as 1889. (Ref: The Western Canadians 1600-1900 - ref 929.3712 WES V.2)

On December 23, 1901, in Saskatchewan, Canada, Edward Perry Mockford married Ida Jane Minty (born April 22, 1880, in Paisley, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Ida was a twin.).

Edward and Ida Mockford had nine children: Earl James; Oliver; William (Bill) (Twin); Mary (Twin); Mabel; Ruby; Amy; Edward; and Albert Edward Perry.

In 1911, Edward Mockford, 29, is shown residing at Range 30 West of The 1st M., Saskatchewan, Canada, along with his wife Ida Mockford, 26; and children: Albert E. Mockford, 4; James E. Mockford, 1; and Rubena L. Mockford, 3.

Edward Perry Mockford died on November 5, 1919, at the age of 42 years, 7 months and 15 days. Ida Jane Minty Mockford died May 13, 1971. Edward is buried with his wife in Rocanville Cemetery, Saskatchewan, Canada.
