NotesWilliam was born to Frederick Hugh Girvan, a compositor printer, and his wife, Margaret Galtress of Liverpool.

In 1901, William was living with his brother and mother, Margaret Girvan, at the home of his grandmother, Margaret Galtress, at 9 Bunyan Street, West Derby, Lancashire, England. (Class: RG13; Piece: 3495; Folio: 66; Page: 27.)

In 1904, William migrated to Canada. William was placed about this time as a domestic with Wallie Patch and family in Brome Township, Brome, Quebec. His brother Albert, followed and served with the same family as shown in the 1911 Census of Canada.

In 1916, William was living in Sutton, Quebec. He signed onto the Canadian Expeditionary Force (Army; Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment); 24th Bn.), stating he was a farmer and that he was not married.

William Coleman Girvan died August 30, 1918 in Ligny-St. Flochel, France. He is buried at the LIGNY-ST. FLOCHEL BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. His memory is commemorated on Page 415 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.
