NotesThe Roberts brothers mother had been the victim of an abusive spouse she was forced to leave but then was unable to support the boys


Walter Henry Roberts, was sent to Canada in March 1900 by Barnardo's along with his brother William George. He was sent to work for a farmer named Lakey in Mulock, Saskatchewan, near Yorkton, where he was severely abused. Evidence of an attack with a pitchfork, plus being made to work without proper footwear so that one of his toes froze and had to be amputated. One report said that unless Walter was taken away from Lakey "there would be nothing but bones" left, as he "was used as some men use dumb animals." Lakey was charged with assault causing bodily harm under Section 217 of the Criminal Code. His punishment? A choice of a $55 fine or 8 months' imprisonment.
