NotesPaternity
1872-1873 , St. George in the East, London, England
John George Lucken was born in Stepney, East End of London, in 1873. There was a question of the year of his birth, whether 1872 or 1873. This was brought to my attention from the information sent to me from Barnardo's, the home who took care of him and sent him to Canada. There was a letter from my great-grandfather John Lucken to Barnardo's when he was about 65 years old to verify his year of birth for the Canada Pension old age security.
This became important when I was searching for his father, Barnard Lucken/Lecken who was a merchant seaman and did not appear in any English census, presumably because he was at sea. He also died somewhere before 1881 as his wife Charlotte was listed as a widow in the 1881 census. I had found a Bernard Lucken who died in Friern Barnet in 1872, but I kept discounting this as it was north of London and it was a year too early to be John's father. He could not possibly have died in 1872 if John was born in 1873. Well, I finally sent for the death certificate and it turned out that Bernard Lucken was a sailor of about the right age who died in a lunatic asylum (Friern Barnet/Colney Hatch) in 1872. If you check the dates (and the English were very meticulous about their dates), my great-grandfather John George Lucken was born 9 1/2 months after the death of Bernard Lucken in the Colney Hatch. As much as I hate to admit it, this explains why his mother Charlotte was put into a work house for 18 months, even though she had brothers living in the east end, only blocks from where she was and who were rich enough to afford servants. It also explains why she insisted in the documents at Barnardo's that John was born in 1872, even though I have the birth certificate which shows he was born in 1873.
It would appear that Bernard/Barnard Lucken/Lecken was not actually the father of John George Lucken. I have left it so on the family tree as obviously, we will never know who Johnny's father is and he is the father of John's brother William (Billy) Lucken.
