NotesIn 1891, Sarah Jane Wilkinson, 12 (along with her sister, Annie Wilkinson, 10), arrived at Quebec, Canada, with a group of 39 girls accompanied by Mrs Soffe, as matron, en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Her grandson related:

Sarah Jane, and her little sister Annie, were "orphaned at a young age" and sent to a workhouse.

Sarah Jane was sent to work on a farm near Hudson Bay, where she learned from Indians how to harvest flax (pull it, don't cut it).

Sarah Jane did return to England when she was 18, but eventually returned to North America via Canada, and then to the US, where she married Charles F. Read, who also was from England, in 1910.

In 1920, Sara Read, 41, was shown residing at 627 Sixth Street, Rochester Ward 22, Monroe, New York, along with her husband, Charles F. Read, 35, printer; and children: Doris M. Read, 10; Herbert C. Read, 8; Robert Read, 6; Ethel M. Read, 3-8/12; and Grace N. Read, 1-3/12. (Source: 1920 Census of the United States; Census Place: Rochester Ward 22, Monroe, New York; Roll: T625_1125; Page: 13A; Enumeration District: 262; Image: 1106.)

In 1930, Sarah J. Read, 50, was shown residing at 107 Eastman Avenue, Rochester, Monroe, New York, along with her husband, Charles F. Read, 45, printer; and children: Doris M. Read, 20, clerical, Gas & Electric Co.; Herbert C. Read, 18, laborer, cemetery; Robert F. Read, 16; Ethel M. Read, 15; and Grace E. Read, 11. (Source: 1930 Census of the United States; Census Place: Rochester, Monroe, New York; Roll: 1450; Page: 45B; Enumeration District: 46; Image: 170.0.)

Charles and Sarah Wilkinson Read's oldest son, Robert Frederic Read, Photographer's Mate 3rd Class, United States Navy, was killed in action on August 24, 1942 in the Battle of the Solomon Islands, aboard the carrier USS Enterprise.
