In 1911, Edward Shackleton, 11, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 156 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On December 23, 1922, at Chatham, Kent, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Gordon Edward Shackleton, 21, laborer, born in England to Smith Shackleton and Eva Ferguson; and Gladys Muriel Graham, 19, home duties, born in Thamesville, Ontario, Canada, to James Graham and Prudentia Ann Sherman. [EDITORS NOTE: Edward and Avilene Clunis, Gordon's adopted parents, were witnesses to the marriage.]

Brothers meet again
After 61 years, a stoic reunion

John Schackleton of London, England, figured that 61 years was long enough to without seeing his brother.

So about three months ago he sent a letter to his brother Gordon, in Chatham, saying he was coming to Canada for a visit.

The reunion took place early Friday evening at Windsor Airport.

As they embraced one another, brother Gordon could only thin of one thing to say: "Long time no see."

Gordon Shackleton left his native England in 1909 at the age of nine. He, his brother and a sister, Priscilla, had all been in an orphanage and when some of the orphans were being sent to Canada, Gordon went with them. In Canada, he was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Clunis, of Chatham, and has lived there ever since.

He got married and had a son Alvin, who is presently in England on vacation. Alvin had already visited his relatives.

During his years in Chatham, Gordon worked in Canada and Dominion Sugar Company for 43 years. He and his wife live at 367 Lacroix St.

John also married and had two children. He worked as a policeman in London but is now retired.

Over the years the two brothers kept in contact, mostly through letters their wives exchanged.

While waiting in the terminal, Gordon who is now 68 years old, wondered if he would recognize his brother. John was only five years old when Gordon left England.

But when the plane arrived, there was no question, the brothers recognized each other almost immediately.

John who is now 65, and his wife, will stay in Canada for a month. During this time Gordon and his wife plan to take them to various places in Ontario.

As the brothers and their wives left the terminal to return to Chatham and a "big meal and a big toast," they began reminiscing. John said he recalled when Gordon's boat was leaving for Canada, the band was playing "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."

His brother only replied "So they were. So they were."
