NotesMartha's mother died when Martha was aged five months; her father died when Martha was five years old. Martha then went into a school for children of policemen (her father was a policeman). In 1908, at age 13, Martha and her older sister Olive aged 15, travelled on the ship "Corsican" to Canada. Martha later (still as a teenager) went to Pittsburgh PA to be a maid/companion of Elrose Silverman (nee Reisenstein). Later Martha became simply a companion.

In 1917, Martha visited Olive in Cochrane Ontario Canada. There Martha met Murdo Munro MacLeod and two weeks later was engaged, and then married soon after.

Martha and Murdo MacLeod had four children, a son and then three girls.

Two of Martha and Murdo's daughters emigrated separately to Australia - Doris Margaret Chapman MacLeod in 1945 soon after WWII ended, the second Constance Mary MacLeod in 1952.

Each married an Australian and each had a family.
