NotesA birth registration was found for William Busby: Year of Registration: 1894; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Durham (1837-1938); County: Durham; Volume: 10a; Page: 371.

William Busby was at the Banstead Residential School for 4 years before being admitted to the Liverpool Sheltering Home on April 16, 1908. He was in the Liverpool home for only a month before being sent to Canada.

William had a sister Mabel who was there also, but who did not get sent over. She remained at Banstead, presumably because she was thought to be in "delicate health", according to William's records.

In 1908, William Bushby, 14, arrived in a group of 84 boys and girls from Liverpool Sheltering Home en route to Knowlton, Quebec, Canada.

William was placed on a farm in Marbleton, Quebec. Unlike many of the sad experiences recounted, William was taken in as a member of the family, and treated very well. When he returned from serving in WWI, his foster family was also very kind to his young English bride.

On December 16, 1915, at Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, William Busby, 21, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in London, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Miss Mabel Busby, who resided c/o Mrs. Cohen, 8 Thistlewaite Road, Clapton, London, England; that his date of birth was February 13, 1894; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 6 inches in height; light complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair. He was a member of the the Church of England. He had three big vaccination scars in triangle on left arm near the shoulder of the diameter of one inch about each.
