NotesThomas was the 4th of 7 children born to John Barton and Elizabeth Henderson of Gateshead, Durham, England. He was born on July 27, 1892 and christened on August 14, 1892 at Holy Trinity Parish in Gateshead. By May 1905, his father had died as well as a younger brother and sister.

The following remarks were noted by an N.S.P.C.C. inspector, a Mr. Richards:

Mr. Richards, N.S.P.C.C. Gateshead, brought this case--one of hard pinching poverty--to the notice of our Newcastle superintendent. Both went to the home and found the mother at 3 pm crouched in the corner of an old bed wrapped in two old coats. She was in a fearfully enfeebled condition due to lack of proper nourishment. Thomas had gone off with all the money she possessed which amounted to 1 1/2 d. From our inspector's report, we gather the father, John Barton, a corporation labourer, died from .......three years ago at Gateshead. The family have since been in constant want. The brother John, who ought to substantially help is nor fond of work, and when earning occasionally 18/- a week, he gives the mother but 8/-. At present, he is unemployed. Parish relief-- 3/ a week--is granted the mother, and the previous week after paying 2/6 for rent, the mother had be 6d left for the week. The rent is 20/ in arrears. Mr Strangheir, the schoolmaster said Thomas had often complained to him or not having sufficient food to eat. He had kept excellent attendances until lately, when he began to play truant, and he feared the worst for him as he probably would have stolen for food. The schoolmistress of Joseph said she believed the boys had been half starved.

It is evident that the mother, worn by physical and mental weakness, ought to enter the workhouse, which eventually she will be obliged to do. Thomas was eager to enter the Homes because he could not "get enough to eat", the brother Richmond preferred knocking about the streets and selling papers.

Both boys appear healthy.

Relatives:
Mother--Elizabeth Barton (45), widow, 13 Arthur St, Gateshead.
Brothers--John George (20), loafer, Richmond (14), paper seller, with mother.
Sister--Mary Batey (23) wife of labourere, 13 Arthur St, Gateshead.
Grandmother (maternal)--Isabella Henderson, widow, poor circumstances, 3 Eldon Place, Gateshead.
Aunt (maternal)--Isabella Mitchell, 3 Church st. Gatesheaad

Both boys, Thomas and his younger brother Joseph, eventually emigrated to Canada with Barnardos agency, Thomas in 1906 and Joseph in 1907.
