In 1901, Leonard Colbear, 5 years of age, was shown residing at 30 Strode Road, North End and Buckland, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Other family members included: Arthur Colbear, 48, carrier/oil stores; Arthur Colbear, 19, oil stores; Elizabeth Colbear, 46; Frederick Colbear, 11; Maggie Colbear, 8; Ada Colbear, 13; May Colbear, 3; and Willie Colbear, 15. In 1908, Lionel [sic] Colbear, 10, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with 244 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (The correct name, Leonard David Colbear, was confirmed by documentation on the Atlantic Ports Passenger Lists, 1820-1873 and 1893-1959.)

In 1911, Leonard Colbear, 14, is shown as the adopted son of Edgar and Lorinda Tofflemire, of Colchester South, Essex South, Ontario, Canada. His date of birth is shown as January 1897 and his immigration year as 1908.

[EDITORS NOTE: In 1914, on the ship Andania, Margaret's brother, Frederick Colbear, arrived at Quebec, Canada, to reside with his brother in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. He declared that he was a farm laborer and chauffeur and intended to remain permanently. Frederick Colbear enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and died at the Wentworth Sanitorium, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, from pulmonary tuberculosis on January 10, 1919. He was buried at St. John's Norway Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Sec. 6. Range 14. Lot 9.)

On January 14, 1915, at Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Leonard Colbear, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Portsmouth, England; that his next of kin was his brother Fred Coldbear [sic], who resided c/o E. Merson, Whitby, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was January 22, 1896; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 11 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

On December 24, 1919, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Leonard David Colbear, 22, caretaker, born in Trowbridge, England, to Arthur Colbear and Elizabeth Stevens; and Helen Florence Emaline Williams, 19, born in West Browich, England, to Edward N. Williams and Sarah Elizabeth Johnson.
