NotesIn 1906, James Reid, 9, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

It is believed that this James Reid is the same Jimmy Reid, who was a witness in the murder of William Curry on Christmas Day, 1908, in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

The Toronto Star, on January 7, 1908, told of the trial of John Davis (Jack) Terrace who worked with Jimmy Reid, home boy, on the farm of James Curry and William Curry. William Curry had been murdered by Terrace during a dispute over his wages. Jimmy Reid was the main witness for the prosecution.

"Jimmy Reid, the 12 year old home boy was then called. The lad was just able to lean on the rail of the witness box.

To Mr. McFadden, the boy said that he had been with the Currys since April.

'Where did you spend Christmas Day?'

'I went over with Mr. Curry to Mrs. Black's. I walked back in the afternoon and Terrace was there. He told me to change my clothes before the folks got home.'

'You were in your Sunday clothes?'

'Yes.'

'What did you and Terrace do until the folks came?'

'We played checkers until nearly dark. We then did the chores.'

'Did Terrace say anything to you?'

'Yes. He said he hoped they would come home late and come home alone.'

Throughout his testimony the lad referred to the deceased Curry as father to distinguish him from his son.

The lad then described the scene in the sitting room with young Curry and Terrace reading at the table. The lad was nearly asleep near the stove when Terrace asked him twice to get a lantern so that they could go to bed. Just then Jack got up and pointed a gun at Mr. Currey. 'Put your hands behind your back, and if you dare to move I'll shoot you.'

'Did Jack say anything?'

'Yes, he showed me some twine he had in his pocket and made a motion.'

'Did you know what he meant?'

'No, didn't, and then father came into the room and Jack said to him, If you dare to move I'll shoot you, too. Then Jack shot him.'

'Where were you at this time?'

'I was near the stove beside the wall. After that I went out on the verandah and sat there. After that I saw another flash in the room, and heard another report. I pushed open the door, and Mr. Curry and Jack were on the floor near the lounge. Mr. Curry then asked me to go for Mr. McKay, our nearest neighbor. I put on my boots and went for him.'

'When you got back what was the condition of things in the room?'

'The place was full of smoke, oil was spilt all over, the lounge was upset on the floor, and Jack lay tied with ropes near the lounge.'

'Where was Mr. Curry?'

'He wasn't there, the doctor was sent for as quickly as possible, but father died shortly after he arrived.'

'Did you stay up all night?'

'Yes. I didn't want to sleep.'

Several times during the giving of this evidence, the lad almost broke into sobs and but for Mr. McFadden's gentle leading might have been unable to tell his story."
