NotesA birth registration was found for Ernest H Alderson: Year of Registration: 1914; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; Mother's Maiden Name: Dewey; District: Auckland; County: Durham; Volume: 10a; Page: 542. Parents: Thomas W. Alderson and Elizabeth Dewey, married 1912, Auckland, Durham, England.

In 1930, Ernest Alderson, 15, arrived at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, in a group of Barnardo children. His next of kin was given as his Father - Thos Wm Alderson, 4 Sussex St, Blyth, Northumberland, and his destination as Mr John Hobday, 538 Jarvis St, Toronto. His intended occupation was farming.

In July, 1941, he married Myrtle Jenny Cooney, joining the Royal Canadian Air Force a month later.

Ernest Alderson was posted to the United Kingdom in December, 1942, as an airgunner on No 408 (RCAF) Squadron based at RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire. On the night of the 23rd or 24th of May, 1943, en route for Dortmund, his Halifax was shot down near Bergkaman. All the crew were killed and while five of its members are commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Flt Sgt Adlerson and the aircraft's captain, Flight Officer Colvin, are buried in the Reichswald Forest Military Cemetery in Germany.

On May 24, 1943, Flight Sergeant Ernest Henry Alderson, 29, Air Gunner, was declared deceased after being 'missing in action' in Germany. His parents were given as Thomas William Alderson and Elizabeth Goldsborough. His last residence was Peterborough, Ontario.

[EDITORS NOTE: There is some confusion as where Ernest is buried. One site states he is in Little Lake Cemetery, Peterborough, and another site gives his burial place as Reichswald Forest Military Cemetery, Germany.]

Ernest Alderson is remembered on the Otonabee Township War Memorial, Keene, Ontario, Canada. The Memorial was erected in 1921, in memory of those who lost their lives in the Great War, also those that lost their lives in World War II.

His wife Myrtle is buried in Little Lake Cemetery (Section B), Peterborough

There are two letters written to Ernest dated 1930-1931 and a copy of the Ups and Downs held at Peterborough City Archives
