In 1912, James Hetherington, 14 (along with his brother, Charles Hetherington, 11), arrived at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, with a group of 60 children accompanied by Alice Taylor en route to Knowlton, Quebec, Canada.

On July 1, 1916, at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, James Hetherington, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that his present address was c/o C. M. Thompson, Brome, Quebec, Canada; that he was born in Paddington, London, England; that his next of kin was his father, Joseph Hetherington, 5 Woodfield Road, Paddington, London, England; that he was born April 1, 1898; that he was a mechanic; and that he was not married. He had previously served in the 4th Field Company, C.E. He was described as 5 foot 9 inches in height; fresh complexion; blue eyes; dark hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had a mole on his back.
