NotesDad's father died when he was 4. His mother, a charwoman, struggled along until 1914 when she applied for Ben to be admitted to the Children's Home In Bethnal Green. Her 2 older children were found places befitting their age and circumstance. In 1920 The Home asked for her permission to send Ben to Canada as a farm labourer. Upon arriving in Canada the Hamilton Receiving Home placed him on a farm in Waterdown. He stayed there reluctantly until he turned 18. He wanted to return to England but never could get enough money together. After his Mother died in 1928 there was no longer the emotional pull for him to return home. He entirely lost touch with his brother. When he was 35 years old he married my Mother. He adopted her 12 year old son and I was born 7 years later. After leaving his farm placement he worked as a restaurant cook, lumber camp cook, and hospital orderly. Together with my Mother they owned a fish and chip store, then a small farm, then a general store, and finally a grocery/butcher shop. After losing his wife and selling the last business he went to work as a night person at a nursing home. He passed away at the age of 63.
