In 1891, Mary Pearson, 14, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 21 female domestics en route to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.

By 1895, Mary Scott Pearson was employed at the home of a Prescott brewer, where she received a small, plain Christmas card, still in the possession of Jim Brownell, her grandson.

The Toronto Sun told the story of Mary Pearson and her sister, Maggie. Mary was the grandmother of MPP Jim Brownell (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry), who was successful in 2011 in securing September 28th as British Home Child Day in Ontario.

"Jim Brownell (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry) is the grandson of a home child.

He?s tried twice to get a private member?s bill passed that would designate Sept. 28 as British Home Child Day at the Legislature.

Curtis Brownell, 62, died on October 19, 1931, at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, of acute septic prostratitus. Informant was his wife, Mary Brownell, who resided at Moulinette, Ontario, Canada. He was buried in Moulinette, Ontario, Canada.

Finally, after two failed attempts, last week he managed to get the bill past Third Reading with the help of New Democrat Cheri DiNovo and Tory Steve Clark.

13 years old

His grandmother, Mary Scott Pearson, came to Canada alone in 1891 when she was just 13 years old. Her sister, Maggie, arrived in 1894.

?Her father had died. Her mother remarried and then her mother died. So they were in a family of stepparents who didn?t really want them,? Brownell explained in an interview.

The sisters were originally placed in an industrial school in Scotland, where they were separated, before being sent to Canada.

Mary was sent to the Fairknowe Home in Brockville, that served as a placement centre for many home children.

His grandmother worked as a domestic servant for a Presbyterian minister in Prescott before moving to St. John?s Presbyterian Church in Cornwall to work.

Brownell?s most treasured possession is a letter of reference she was given by the minister in Prescott and a small Bible he believes speaks to the strength of her faith.

In Cornwall she met and married Brownell?s grandfather ? and the rest, as they say, is history."

Mary left Prescott in 1901, moving to Summerstown where she worked on the Chafee family farm and became part of the Salem Church congregation. A short while later she was employed at a St. John Presbyterian minister's home in Cornwall, where she met Curtis Brownell.

On March 21, 1906, at The Manse, Cornwall, Stormont, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Mary Scott Pearson, 28, domestic, born in Glasgow, Scotland, to David Pearson and Mary Scott; and Curtis Brownell, 37, railroad foreman, born in Owabruck Township, Stormont, Ontario, Canada, to Curtis John Brownell and Margaret Ellen Hollister.
