Noteswith William Burleigh Carman, P.O Osman, Lot 3, Con 5, Ekfrid Twp, Middlesex, Ontario

July 11 1900

Age 9, comfortable farm home, employed at light farm work, good health, attends Presbyterian church and Sunday school regularly, has not attended Public School here, character fair. Terms-Board and Clothing for three years. Mr Carman does not appear to be fully satisfied with this little lad, he is, however, very much improved since coming here, and Mr Carman will do the best he can for him, and says that he makes allowance for the lad on account of his age. Stokes is a bright, good looking lad. Mr Carman is a prosperous farmer. They treat him well and he would not care to leave. His only complaint was that he does not like working about the barnyard

In 1901, Wm Carman, 31, wife Edith, 28, and farm lab John Stokes, 11, in Zone, Bothwell, Ontario

Sent by Edmonton Union

with William B Carman, farmer, Thamesville, Kent, Ontario

March 15 1902

Age 12, unsuitable home, employed at general farm work, good health, attends neither church or school. Mr Carman states he is untruthful and unreliable-terms $75 at the expiration of indenture in 1906. The boys personal appearance indicates that he is not well treated. Although he does his full share of the work, I am satisfied there is constant friction between himself and Mr Carman. The boy is not being sent to school. His general progress is not satisfactory, and I am of the opinion he should be removed.
