Notes Son of Alfred & Annie Hemmings (or Hemming - sometimes even within the family the 's' has been dropped!). Born in Bristol, UK abt 1892
Annie dies circa 1899 then it appears that Alfred snr. in ailing health in 1901 arranges for his 2 daughters Matilda 10 & Annie 3, to be taken in by Alice Hayman, Bristol. They are listed in 1901 census as being part of the Hayman family! No Hemming name to be found for them... I think Alice is loosely related in some way (so a living family member tells me - but I haven't corroborated this yet), Alice's husband is a dock laborer like Alfred Hemmings.
Alfred jnr 9 & his brother William 5 are admitted to the Barton Regis workhouse with their father Alfred, who dies the next day!
Such an unhappy time for all those poor children, it was always looked upon as very sad and that Alfred's was heart was broken by the death of his wife.
In 1904 Alfred, leaves for St John, New Brunswick, Canada, aged 12 from Liverpool UK bound for Quebec, Canada, courtesy of the Bristol Emigration Society.
I can see the above society's annual statutory check on Alfred until 1909 = maybe 'cos he is 16?? Then it all stops...
I have no other certified data after that. I would love to know where he was staying and what happened to him.
I do have one story...
Tilly = Matilda, cleaning her bedrooms upstairs one day, was surprised by Alfred (apparently), who scaled the front of her house to say 'Hi'!! He was apparently visiting from Canada due to the WW1 posting he had received... I don't know how true this is - but then why make it up?! If this is true - did Alfred join the CEF and take the opportunity to visit?? Did he die in the war? Where? Apparently they never heard from him after that and they assumed that he had died in the war, but never knew for sure.
If I could just get some more details on where he stayed in Canada, maybe that could lead me through to him... He may have ended up calling himself Fred perhaps??
William thankfully did not get sent away from his family and Matilda his older sister, ended up being the Grandma of my husband.
