NotesIn 1891, Maurice Sullivan, 5, inmate, in St Agnes Orphanage, Leyton, Essex

Sent by St George in the East Union

with Charles McCarthy, P.O Fieldville, Low Twp, Ottawa, Quebec

December 11 1900

About 14 years of age, home hardly suitable, employed at house work principally, very healthy, attends Roman Catholic Church, no schooling, character good, terms-receives clothes and $15 per year. I do not consider that this boy has many advantages here. Charles McCarthy is a bachelor, and his mother keeps house for him, and together with this boy they form the family. Mr McCarthy seems very undecided whether he will continue the boy in his employ or not. Sullivan's entire work is in and about the house. He
appears to be satisfied and contented with his situation and says that he is well treated.

until 11th of March last with Charles McCarthy, Fieldville, Low Twp, Ottawa, Quebec

April 3 1902

Age 16, on the 11th March last, McCarthy brought Maurice Sullivan to the Society's Home near Ottawa, in poor health. The Superintendant summoned a physican who ordered Sullivan removed to a City Hospital. After a time he was discharged. His case was diagnosed as consumption. I saw the boy today, and found him confined to his bed, looking very ill indeed.

Frank Pedley, Esquire, Superintendant of Immigration

Sir, In reply to your enquiry of the 3rd instant, re Maurice Sullivan, I would state that he is suffering from acute tuberculosis.

Yours truly

'Sgd' G W Smith, house surgeon

21 April 1902
