NotesIn 1934, George Leyland, 10, arrived at Sydney, Australia, in a group of 29 children accompanied by Rev. Kenneth Proctor and Miss Maureen Herbert en route to Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra Western Australia.

As a bright-eyed 10-year-old, George Leyland believed he was going on a great adventure when he set sail with 45 British orphans for Australia. ...

George had been placed in an orphanage as a boy because his mother could not care for him. Later, he was sent to the Fairbridge Farm School in Western Australia, completely unaware that he had three sisters living in Britain.

"I had been writing to my mother, but she never mentioned to me that I had three sisters," Mr. Leyland said.

He was reunited in a tearful, emotional meeting, in Taronga Park Zoo in 1984 when he met his siter, Edith Winn, for the first time. It was televised by the BBC to an audience of three million in Birmingham, England.

"I only wish we had come out as well," said Mr. Leyland's sister, Edith.

"It was a brave new world and a great opportunity. We three girls were fostered out and pushed around a lot.

During the war we had to go back to the orphanage. The houses we stayed in were clean, good homes, but we didn't have a mother's love."
