NotesEdward Bird and his sisters, Lilian, Florence and Emily, were admitted to Lambeth Union Workhouse on July 16, 1897, and discharged to Norwood School on December 29, 1897. Their father Charles had deserted the family. He was later arrested and sentenced to one month's hard labour in November 1897, and, again, to one month on January 15, 1898. Their mother, Alice was residing in Princes Road Workhouse.

Their grandmother, Mrs. Seabrook, resided at 51 Merrow Street, Walworth, Camberwell, London, England. An aunt, Mrs. Paull, resided at 50 Riverhall Street, Wandsworth, London, England.

Sister Violet placed in service by MABYS on January 21, 1898, and was residing at Larkhall Lane, Clapham, London, England.

Florence Bird was sent to service on December 4, 1899, in care of Mrs. Hicks, 3 Hendham Road, Upper Tooting.

Lilian Bird was discharged to Barnardo's Home on August 1, 1900.

Edward Bird was discharged on May 28, 1902, to Barnardo's Home.

In 1902, Edward Bird, 11, arrived at Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in a large group of 395 Barnardo children en route to Toronto and Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Edward Bird enlisted in the Army on March 21 1916 in Ottawa, Ontario. His next of kid was listed as his sister Florence who was now living in Canada.

Pte. J. Bird Dead, Pte, J Bird, who is officially reported died of wounds, is the brother of Mrs. W. Glibert, at 107 Perth Ave. At the time of his enlistment into an artillery unit at Ottawa, Pte. Bird was a former resident of Richmond, Ontario. He left Canada in June last, went straight to France, and in a recent letter received by his sister, he spoke of having just come out of the trenches. He said he was enjoying the best of health and anticipating an really termination of the war and hoped soon to be back in Canada. About the same time this letter was received Mrs. Gilbert read in the newspapers that her brother had been wounded, but although she instituted inquires at Ottawa, she could get no information till a week later, when on June 19 she received a notification that Pte Bird had died of his wounds and since then she has procured a copy of a telegram dated June 11, stating that he had been dangerously wounded. The latter telegram had not been delivered to her because it had been wrongly addressed by Ottawa. Mrs. Gilbert's husband is himself a South African veteran and has two brothers overseas, one a prisoner in Germany and the other in the trenches and one of his nephews was killed after he had been in the firing line four days. Toronto Star - June 21st 1917

Fainted at News: Mrs. George Gilbert, 107 Perth avenue fainted at the supper table when on glancing at a newspaper she noticed the name of her brother, Pte. Edward John Bird, among the wounded. No official report has been received. Pte Bird enlisted when an Ottawa battalion and reached France last July, being transferred to a trench mortar battery. His parents live in England where he was born 25 years ago, coming to Canada 16 years ago. Toronto Star- June 16th 1917
