NotesJAMES JACOB SIDWELL
Barnardo?s Homes forwarded copies of their records but they are handwritten and difficult to read. Also large periods of time appear to be missing from the record. Below is a transcription of the record provided:
On 5 July 1886, James was admitted to Barnardo?s and entered the Receiving House, Stepney Causeway, East London. On 9 July 1886, he went to Cairns House, East London. On 16 March 1887, James sailed to Canada aboard SS Parisian and arrived in Halifax on 28 March 1887.
Placed with W Jno Snell, Pollimore P.Q. (Province de Quebec, Canada)
1/3/88 Still with W Snell.
Oct /88 agreement signed by Mr. Snell to keep boy till 21. Board, lodging, washing and clothing $200. Visited by Mr. Barthrop.
24/9/88 This boy is in first rate care and very happy and comfortable in his place. Mr. and Mrs. Snell treat him very much as their own son and he has excellent prospects. His employer had a little trouble with him last summer, but he is now conducting himself in a perfectly satisfactory manner. He has acquired a fair knowledge of farm-work and is very useful in handling horses. He is in excellent health and attends Church on Sunday and Day School.
7/1/89 Writes thanking Mr. Owen for writing to him. He has been to school for a short time this fall and has joined the Band ? and hopes to do better in future, having given way to his temper very much in the past. Will send his??..
.. has a violent temper and is unruly at himself but Mr. B thinks if encouraged by the gift of a prize it as a would have a good effect on him.
24/5/89 Finds $1 as a subscription towards the Home. He is quite well and getting along nicely in his place.
27/7/89 Thanks Dr. Barnardo for his prize.
13/8/90 Mr. Owen?s half yearly report ? We have received no information during the past four months, but knowing that this boy is in an excellent home, under kind and careful training and ?.., we have every reason to know that he is well thinking and satisfactory progress.
6/1/91 Mr Owens half yearly report ? letter from employer 6/1/91 This letter asks that the agreement may be cancelled as the boy is ?bad??. Gives no particulars beyond the remark that he fears this boy ?has sprung from the dangerous class that we hear so much about.? We have written asking for further particulars but have not yet received any further communication on the subject. The boy has an excellent situation up to the present.
17/1/98 Letter from Mr Owen. Enclosing one from this young man?s wife to her mother-in-law. Applicant written to and asked if she knows where she is now living. Letter returned, 21-1-98, marked ?gone, no address?.
24/1/98 Mr. Fowles wrote to Mr. Foulkes, our B-ham agent today, asking him to make enquiries to ascertain the address of the young man?s mother.
15/2/98 Mr Foulkes wrote to inform us that he had found this lad?s mother. She had married again and was again a widow. Her name and address are: Mrs. Merry, 13 Sherbourne Street, Coventry.
Jan/00 Mr. Owen reports ? Address Carlingford, Ontario. Health good. Conduct satisfactory. Is married and living in a country village in Western Ontario.
