NotesInventor of the telephone AG Bell spent part of his life in Brantford, Ontario. He writes Monday - Christmas Day - 1876, in a letter about a BHC his father has taken into his home in Brantford. The boy was Henry Schmidt, who came to Canada in 1875 with Annie McPherson. Bell speaks of him with affection and some curiosity.


regarding Henry Schmidt: "I don't know that I have much to add. My father has in his employ a boy from England - an orphan who has been taken from the slums of London - to make an honest living in a new World. A Canadian lady (Miss Macpherson) devotes herself to this work. She collects together poor children in the large cities of the old world - children without homes - living in the streets - ragged ignorant & dirty - she takes them to a home she has established in England - and educates & clothes them for about three or four years and then pays their expenses to Canada. She supports a home for them in Belleville Ontario where they remain until they can gain employment with farmers or others. The boy my father has - Henry Schmidt - has quite a remarkable looking head - devours books - and altogether is quite a character. He has cut out with his pen-knife the words Mabel & Gertrude on the cards enclosed. I wish you could draw his great shaggy head - like a huge mop - very much out of repair - I am sure there is a sad story behind it - which I shall try to investigate & let you know at some future time."
