NotesIn 1894, Alfred W. Ansell, 9, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 224 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, and Manitoba, Canada.

On 22nd September 1914, Alfred William Ansell, 30, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regt. Number 157531). He declared that he was born in Highgate, London, England; that his next of kin was the Secretary, Dr. Barnardo Homes, 214 Farley Avenue, Toronto, Canada; that his date of birth was March 3, 1885; that he was a Stationary Engineer; that he had spent 2 years in active militia, 18 months with Royal Mil M Police R C R, and 3 months with R C M R; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/4 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He was described as 5 foot 4-3/4 inches in height; dark complexion; grey eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith. He had tattoos of a girl in horse shoe on his right forearm; rose on back of his left hand; and others on both arms.

On August 30, 1915, Alfred William Ansell, 30, re-enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regt. Number 10593). He declared that he was born in Highgate, London, England; that his next of kin was the Secretary, Dr. Barnardo Homes, 214 Farley Avenue, Toronto, Canada; that his date of birth was March 3, 1885; that he was a farm labourer; that he had spent 3 months as a trooper in Winnipeg Mounted Rifles and 1 1/2 years in K Company, Royal Can Regiment (Regular); and that he was not married. He had tattoo marks of a horseshoe, flower outside, girl inside, anchor separate and below, right forearm; cowgirl side right forearm, star separate and below; left forearm, sailor girl upper side, Diana below, girl's bust, heart and crossed hands, rose back of hand, sailor bust, Scotch girl bust, all left.

On January 26, 1916, Alfred William Ansell, 30, re-enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regt. Number 799682). He declared that he resided at Reception Hospital, College Street, Toronto, Canada; that he was born in Highgate, England; that his next of kin was his friend, Miss Florence Watson, Reception Hospital, College Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was March 3, 1885; that he was a Stationary Engineer; that he had spent 4 months with 4th Batt C E F; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/4 inches in height; fresh complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had tattoo marks of a girl, star, anchor, horseshoe, on his right arm; 7 on his left arm; and a scar on the back of his right hand.

On February 10, 1916, at Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, Alfred William Ansell, 30, re-enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Regt Number 725232). He declared that he resided at 205 George Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Highgate, England; that his next of kin was his friend, Florence Watson, who resided at Reception Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was March 3, 1885; that he was a labourer; and that he was not married (he also stated that he had not served in the military previously). He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England. He had numerous designs tattoos on both forearms.

On April 29th 1927, Alfred W Ansell, 42 years, 1 month and 28 days, died in Westminster Hospital, Westminster, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada. Occupation given as patient in hospital, he had resided at place of death for nearly 7 years, he was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, he died of Nephritis with Uraemic Poisoning developing about December 17th, 1926. Contributory cause given as Dementia.

Begun in 1918 as a military hospital, Westminster Hospital was used to treat veterans suffering from mental illness after World War I until 1929.
