NotesMary Jane Carruthers entered the Liverpool Sheltering Home in January of 1888, at the age of 10. Jennie - together with her sister Frances Carruthers, 9 - arrived with a group of 28 males and 33 females of Mrs. Birt's Children at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. From there, they arrived on March 14, 1888, by train at Levis, Quebec, Canada, en route to Acton Vale, Quebec. After a short time in the receiving home in Knowlton, Jennie had 3 placements in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, before she married William SHELL on December 19, 1894 at the Congregational Church, Melbourne, Quebec, Canada.

The couple and their three children (Francis William b 1895, Arthur Albert b.1898 and William George b 1900, all born in Quebec) returned to England and lived with - or close to - Mary Jane's mother, Jane Routledge Carruthers PRUDEN in Liverpool, ENG. William Shell also had relatives in England, close to London. The couple had 2 more children together in England: Margaret May b 1901, Liverpool and Sydney George b 1903, Liverpool. Sometime before 1906, the couple returned to Canada, and Jennie had 2 more children in Quebec: Greta Dorothy b 1906 and Harry James b 1908.

I lose track of Jennie at this point. Curiously, in the Canadian census of 1911 I find daughters Greta and May listed as "inmates" of a Church of England Female Asylum (an orpanage of sorts) in West Quebec. I have yet to find the remaining children or their parents in that census!

Jumping ahead though, I find record of Jennie Shell living in Winthrop, Suffolk, Massachusetts USA in 1930, listed as the Head of household, and with sons Arthur Shell - now 31, and Harry Shell, 21 - living with her.

Clearly Jennie and her husband William Shell parted ways, as William is buried in the Richmond, QC churchyard of St Anne's church. He died in 1947 at the age of 90.

I have a stale dated query from a message board indicating that Jennie died in Billerica, MA, in 1960, but I don't know if this information is factual.
