Charles was born to a Charles Kidd and a young single woman, Ethel Kirk, who worked as a servant. Charles had an older sister Jessie and a younger sister Mildred. He was admitted to the Barnardos Homes at the age of 4 on January 5, 1914.

In 1921, Charles Kirk, 11, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 242 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was indentured to an Ontario farmer.

When Charles was an adult he moved to Toronto where he met and married Annie Watton Christie. Charles and Annie Christie Kirk raised three children and a grandaughter, Angela, until Annie's death. Their children were: Gerald Kirk, born Toronto; Wallace Kirk, born Toronto; and Joyce Kirk, born Toronto.

Annie passed away in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, on May 6th 1966. Charles died in February 1987, in St. Petersburg, Florida (his home was still in Toronto, Ontario, Canada).
