NotesJames Collins was born in Glasgow in 1879 but emigrated to Canada as a boy. He travelled across Canada finally arriving on Bowen Island as a young man. He worked on the island in logging & road building, then bought Collins Farm around 1900. The parcel was originally a 1/2 section or 320 acres that covered an area from Killarey Lake to Deep Bay. He married Laura Irene Collins and they raised seven children on the farm.

For at least 40 years James and Irene Collins maintained an active farm business on the property. This business included a herd of milk cows that grazed throughout the original Collins Farm parcel and produced milk and milk products for sale to island residents. They had a market garden and produced a variety of vegetables and had a flock of chicken that produced eggs and meat for sale locally. The fruit orchard also produced apples, pears and plums for sale.

The Collins were deeply religious and started the first church on the Island. They donated a parcel of land and helped finance the building of the present United Church and Collins Hall.

Irene Collins died in 1961 and James in 1974
