In 1891, Joseph Hathaway, 1 year of age, was residing at 5 Belper, Dudley, Worcestershire, England. Other family members included his mother, Ann Hathaway, 40; his father, David Hathaway, 39, coal miner; Elizabeth Hathaway, 18, hawker; Harriet Hathaway, 9; and Esther Hathaway, 12. (Submitters note: More than likely Joseph was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hathaway. It was unusual for a woman of 40 to have a child of 12 months of age--though not impossible.)

In 1901, Joseph Hathaway, 11, is shown as the adopted son of the William Sharp family in Queensbury, York, New Brunswick, Canada. His date of birth is hown as July 1889 and his immigration year as 1900.

In 1911, Joseph Hathaway, 21, labourer, is shown as a lodger in the residence of Lemuel Brewer in Millville, York, New Brunswick, Canada. His date of birth is shown as November, 1889.

On March 22, 1915, Joseph Hathaway enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Service Number: 111218; Age: 26; Force: Army; Unit: 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles (2nd Central Ontario Regt.). He declared that he was born in Millville, New Brunswick; that his next of kin was Allan Sharp, who resided at Millville, New Brunswick; that his date of birth was November 20, 1892; that he was not married; and that he was a fireman. He was described as 5 foot 3 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; and light brown hair. He had a distinguishing mark of a vaccination scar on his left arm. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

On June 2, 1916, Private Joseph Hathaway died. He is buried MENIN GATE (YPRES) MEMORIAL, Belgium (Grave Reference: Panel 30 and 32.)
