Dave Smith,75 Metal Worker Died In Hospital.......David William (Dave)Smith,33 Bethune street,died at St.Vincent de Paul hospital on Wednesday afternoon,May 3,at the age of 75 years after a long period of failing health.He was a sheet metal worker at the Brockville Psychiatric hospital,retiring in 1966 after 32 years of service.Born at South Shields,England on November 18,1896 he was a son of the late George Alfred Smith and his wife,the former Beatrice Astles.He came to Canada in 1906 and settled in Brockville where he apprenticed to the late John Powers,tinsmith. Mr.Smith served in the army during World War I,enlisting with the 156th Battalion. He transferred to a trench mortar battery and saw service in France,Belgium and with the army of occupation in Germany.He was discharged at the war's end from the 51st Battery,receiving the Military Medal. He also served in World War II with the RCAF for four years in Canada. He was married in Verdun,Que.,to the former Helen Manclark on January 27,1920,who survives. He was a member of St.Paul's Anglican Church of branch 96 of the Royal Canadian Legion,and was nearly a 50 year member of Sussex Lodge No.5 AF and AM, also of the Scottish Rite. Although in poor health for some years,he has enjoyed his cottage in the Westport area. Besides his wife, he is survived by a sister-in-law,Mrs.George A.Smith (Olive) and one nephew,George A.Smith,both of Brockville.He was predeceased by a brother, George Alfred Smith,a longtime employee of The Recorder and Times,on June 6,1964.His remains are at the Johnston Funeral Home,68 King street east,where the funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock with Rev.J.D.McClintock officiating. Cremation will follow in Pinecrest Crematorium,Ottawa.
