They were leaving behind sister Mabel (born 1893); brother Arthur (born 1905) and half-sister Gertrude (born 1908). Arthur emigrated to Australia in 1923 and Gilbert married and moved to Scotland after WWI.

He was described as 5 foot 3-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; grey eyes; and brown hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.
