Not a Barnardo Boy

To the Editor of the Free Press

Sir--My attention was yesterday called ot the telegram in your daily issue of the 2nd inst., from Cayuga, Ont., stating that Charles Coldsmith, a Barnardo boy, had been sentenced to twenty years in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to two serious crimes. Doubting the accuracy of the item, I wired at once to Dr. Barnardo's agent in Toronto asking if there was any foundation for the implied responsibility of the Barnardo institutions and received in reply a telegraphic message, a copy of which I herewith enclose with a request that you give publicity to the same, obliging E. A. STRUTHERS
Agent for Dr. Barnardo's homes in Manitoba

TELEGRAM

TORONTO, Ont., May 4, 1894.

E. A. Struthers, Winnipeg--Just received message from Sheeriff Davis of Cayuga, informing us in reply to our inquiry that one Charles Goldsmith alias McKay was sentenced as reported. We have no such name on our books and statement in Free Press connecting us with this offender is therefore inaccurate. (Signed) OWEN

On March 7, 1911, at Portsmouth, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada, Charles Goldsmith, 28, labourer, born in England, committed suicide by hanging himself at the Penitentiary.
