NotesIn 1899, Alice Smith, 7, along with her sister, Florence Smith, 9, arrived at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. There is no record as to who they were traveling with at this time as no agency is listed on the outgoing manifest. (Also traveling with Florence and Alice were Rosa Savage, 7, and her sister, Laura Savage, 11.)

Her granddaughter, Jane Bartlett, recounts:

My grand-mother Alice Smith (1893) and her sister, Florence Smith (1891) emigrated to Canada from Bristol, England in 1898 [sic]. The two sisters aged 5 yrs. and 7 yrs. arrived in Saint John and stayed at a settlement house on Prince Edward St. until families were found to take care of the girls. Alice was taken in by the Stone family of St. James St. and Florence was eventually adopted by a family on Mount Pleasant Ave. My grand-mother Alice lost contact with her sister after a few years when her new family moved to the United States. My grand-mother worked as a domestic for Mrs. Little on Prince Edward St. and a family in Millidgeville until she met my grand-father Roy Dunn and was married. The two ran a plumbing business in the North End of Saint John for many years and raised seven children.

The only memories that my grand-mother had of her family in England is of her father who she thought was a seaman. The two girls were orphans and may have stayed at the Mueller Orphanage in Bristol, England (EDITORS NOTE: George Mueller- lived in Bristol, England, and ran a chain of orphanages which operated on the principle of faith and prayer). My grand-mother changed her name from Alice to Edith which may or may not have been changed legally. Alice (Edith) lived in Saint John all her life until her death in July, 1979.

EDITORS NOTE: In 1901, an Edith A. Smith, 7 years of age, was residing as a domestic with Joseph and Sophia Wyatt, in Bury, Compton, Quebec, Canada. Her date of birth was shown as January 19, 1894, and her immigration year as 1900. Another home child, Thomas H. Davis, whose date of birth is shown as November 11, 1893, was shown as an adopted son, having immigrated in 1899.

In 1911, Edith Smith, 18, was shown as a domestic to J. Joseph and Elizabeth Stone in Milledgville, St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. Her date of birth is shown as July 1892 and her immigration year as 1899.

On March 31, 1915, at St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, a marriage was registered between Joseph Le Roy Dunn, 22, of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, plumber, born in St. John to Charles D. and Mary A. Dunn; and Edith May Smith, 21, of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, born in St. John to Arthur and Lizzie Smith.
