In 1905, A. E. Alywin, 6, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 433 Barnardo children: males to Toronto, Ontario, and Winnipeg, Manitoba, and the females to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
On June 16, 1915, at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Arthur Edmund Aylwin, 22, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Portsmouth, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Miss Nellie Aylwin, who resided at Chateau Laurier, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was September 24, 1893; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 5-1/2 inches in height; fair complexion; grey eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith. He had a small scar 1-1/2 inches below left eye, small scar 1/2 inch long front lower forearm on left.
Private Arthur Edmund Aylwin died on September 28, 1918, in France. He is buried at Bucquoy Road Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France [Grave Reference: III. A. 17].
