Notes William and Lucy (Shelton) Austin were living in the slums of Birmingham, with seven children aged from three to twenty. Two other children were not living at home. William was a labourer and had been brought up in Owston, a small rural village in Leicestershire. He married Lucy Shelton on March 2, 1868 in Parish Church Prestwold, Leicestershire. It appears that poverty drove him to the city to try and get a better living.
The family moved to Birmingham, where William worked for 16 years at the Corporation Water Department as a tester. In June of 1892, he died of pneumonia and pleurisy at the age of 48. His wife Lucy then worked as a scrubber at the Queens Hospital.
Frederick married Mabel Clair Murdock on June 13, 1911 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was living in the town of Wassis. In 1916, he signed up to serve as a soldier in World War I for the Canadian Forces. At that time, he stated he was a lumberman.
Frederick died in Fredericton in 1974. He and Mabel Austin are buried in Fredericton Rural Cemetery Extension - Section C, Woodstock Road, Fredericton, York Co, New Brunswick, Canada.
