NotesA birth record was found for Bertha Abbey: Year of Registration: 1890; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; District: Stockton; County: Durham, Yorkshire - North Riding; Volume: 10a; Page: 79.

In 1891, Bertha Abbey, 1 year of age, was residing at 28 Newton Street, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, England. Other household members included Thomas Abbey, 35, a general labourer; Hannah C. Abbey, 29; William Abbey, 9; John Abbey, 3; and Jane Abbey, 5. (Source: 1891 Census of England; Class: RG12; Piece: 4051; Folio 30; Page 13; GSU roll: 6099161.)

A death record was found for Thomas Abbey: Estimated Birth Year: abt 1856; Year of Registration: 1895; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; Age at Death: 39; District: Stockton; County: Durham, Yorkshire - North Riding; Volume: 10a; Page: 40.

In 1901, Bertha Abbey, 11, was residing at 8 Paxton Street, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham, England. Other household members included Hannah Abbey (widow), 37; John Abbey, 13, rivet heater in a shipyard; and Thomas Abbey, 8. (Jane Abbey, 15, was working as a domestic in the same building for a neighbor and resided there.) (Source: 1901 Census of England and Wales; Class: RG13; Piece: 4626; Folio: 99; Page: 26.)

Bertha Abbey (B. Abbey) arrived in Quebec with a party of 310 children from Dr. Barnardo, including her brothers Thomas (L. Abbey) and John Abbey (J. Abbey), en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

No further information can be found on Bertha after she arrived in Canada. However, since her brother John returned for a short while, it's also possible that Bertha returned to Yorkshire. There is a marriage registration for Bertha Abbey and James W. Carver found: Year of Registration: 1913; Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar; Spouse's Surname: Carver; District: Sculcoates; County: Yorkshire - East Riding; Volume: 9d; Page: 405. (This is not proof that she returned or that this is the correct Bertha Abbey, it is to encourage further research and provide a theory to this child's later life.)
