James Abernethy married Katie Adelaide Turner (born February 16, 1899, in Aston, Warwickshire, England, the daughter of Leonard Turner and Agnes Sarah Brookes) about 1921 in Canada. They had one child: Barbara Agnes Abernethy, born February 3, 1922, in Drake, Saskatchewan, Canada.

James Abernethy died November 26, 1956, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Katie Adelaide Turner Abernethy died June 22, 1984, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
