On May 21, 1897, Jane Galgani Allen died at 3 Water Lane, Winchester, Hampshire, England, of Phthisis Pulmonalis.
Bertha and her sister Bessie were taken into care by Barnardo's in July 1899. Their mother had died in 1897 and the family quickly disintegrated with the younger children and their father eventually ending up in the Winchester workhouse. Upon their arrival in Canada the girls were separated although they were allowed one visit.
Bertha was first placed with Mr. J. T. and Elsie Byers of Purple Hill, Cartwright, Durham, Ontario, Canada.
On November 14, 1901, Bertha was diagnosed with typhoid fever at Purple Hill. She was treated by a doctor and nurse from Barnardos.
On November 23, 1903, Bertha had surgery at Orthapaedic Hospital, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to correct a flat foot. She was discharged on March 16, 1904.
On April 24, 1905, Bertha was boarding at 1433 King Street, West, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with Mrs. Peaker (dentist).
On March 3, 1906, Bertha was residing with friends of the Byers and sewing at Eaton's store.
In February 1907, Bertha was boarding at 54 Phoebe Street/Avenue, and employed at Eaton's factory.
Bertha married William Winterburn 13 Oct 1916 in Toronto. They did not have any children. Bertha died in 1931; sadly her sister's children had no knowledge of her existence.

WINTERBURN--Suddenly, on August 2nd, 1931, Bertha Evelyn, beloved wife of William W. Winterburn of 102 Hillsdale avenue east.
Funeral private, Wednesday at 2.30 p.m., from York Burial Company's Parlors, 1202 Yonge Street, to Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
