NotesIn 1929, Alfred Slater, 14, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of Salvation Army boys en route to the Salvation Army Home, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He declared upon landing that his contact in Ireland was his father, Mr. A. Slater, who resided at Ballywilliam, Portrush, Co. Antrim, Ireland.

Alfred Slater was shown as originally arriving in Canada on the Athenia April 1, 1929. A letter was found saying he did not actually get on that ship but was held back at the last minute. His name does appear on the Athenia's list, however.

There were many debates in the Canadian parliament regarding the child immigration program in the mid 1890's. The Salvation Army program came under fire because it charged the boys who came under its auspices a fee (about ?25) which appeared to be "double dipping" since the Canadian government was paying for the boys' training at a farm in England and other expenses prior to them being brought to Canada. Others who have done more in depth research can probably better describe this situation.

Alfred was placed orignally with Mr. James Milligan, R.R. #1, Enterprise, Ontario, Canada.

On May 22, 1931, Alfred Slater, 17, labourer, attempted to enter England through the port of Liverpool. He was rejected entry and deported to Ballywilliam, Portrush, Co. Antrim, Ireland.

Alfred was my granduncle he was born in Belfast Maternity Hospital on 03 Jan 1914, this was two year before his parents Thomas Arthur Slater and Lydia "Lily" Williams married. Lily, had a child (my grandfather) from a previous relationship, he was raised by Thomas. Alfred died in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on 10 Nov 1975. We were always toldd about him as the uncle who jumped ship in Canada. He never married.
