NotesLightfoot, Tommy, left by air for Scotland Sept 27 1969 to visit relatives, not an unusual news item in itself, but behind this is an interesting story. Mr. Lightfoot was born in Bridge of Weir, Scotland, and when only a young boy was sent to Canada in 1925 with a group of young Scotch immigrants through the Fairknowe HOmes. He arrived in Brockville and was placed on a district farm, and since that time has lived in various homes, but has spent the greater part of the 44 years in or near Athens. One brother lived at Clinton, Ontario whom he has visited he had three sisters and two brothers in Glasgow, Scotland, he had never seen and he longed to go back home to the land of his birth and visit them. This year the opportunity came, Athens popular Police Chief Scotty McLean was going to Scotland to a reunion of his old regiment and invited Tom to go along. Friends heard of the plan and many wanted to share in the expense of the trip. A "Bon Voyage" party was held for him at Athens United Church on Wed Sept 24 arranged by the U. C. Choir of which he was a member, and other friends. After a sing song was enjoyed, led by Lois Schroeder (Stanford) with Beatrice Watt at the piano, Mrs. Allan Simmons presented Tom with a well filled purse of money on behalf of his friends of the Athens Community. During the evening "Scotty" was also given a fond farewell and best wishes of all for an enjoyable trip, and at the lunch hour a beautifully decorated cake with "Happy Holidays to Scotty and Tommy" was brought forth and cut by Lois Schroeder and later enjoyed by all. A cable announcing the safe arrival of Tom and Scotty in Scotland was received by Mrs. McLean on Monday. Tommy Lightfoot passed away October 2 1985, born May 11, 1901. He came to Canada in 1926 at the age of 16.
