NotesWalter was an orphan by the age of 4, his father Henry died in 1870 after sustaining an injury to his femur, his mother died in the Fever Hospital, Glasgow in 1872.

Walter Lotto, aged 12 parents both dead. Father died from the effect of an accident on board from an anchor line. Mother died one year after in 1872 she died of fever. Since then Walter has been residing with his Uncle, Walter McDougall, 23 Peterson Street, Glasgow who has kept him for the last 8 years. He is also a seafaring man who has been reduced from Captain to Mate through loss of Certificate, will now have to go before the mast, is out of work and not able to keep the boy. His wife is unwell.

The SS Manitoban sailed from Glasgow, Scotland in April, 1881 for Halifax, Canada. Miss Billbrough and Miss Quarrier were in charge of the children taking the party of Quarrier children to Marchmont at Belleville, Ontario.
