NotesHis father was John Menzies, and mother was Margaret Ramsey (as shown on his death cert).

In 1908, John Menzies, 9, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with a group of 88 children, mostly en route to Brockville, Ontario, Canada.

In 1911, John Menzies, 12, was shown as a domestic for Dudley Sharmon and family at their farm located in Lot 13, Sunbury Village, Storrington Township, Frontenac, Ontario, Canada. His date of birth was shown as August 1898 and his immigration year as 1908.

In September 1922, John D. Menzies, 23, was debarred upon attempting to enter the United States through Detroit, Michigan. He was determined to be "LPC", or Likely Public Charge. He declared that he was a labourer; that he was from Scotland; that his last permanent residence was Cobalt, Ontario, Canada; that his closest relation in Canada was his brother, George Menzies, who resided at Box 44, Cobalt, Ontario, Canada; that his final destination was Detroit, Michigan; that he had no address he was going to when he arrived in Detroit; that he intended to stay for one day; and that he was from Aberdeen, Scotland. He was described as 5 foot 6 inches; medium complexion; brown hair; hazel eyes.

He made his money when he was younger traveling all across the western and central United States bootlegging whiskey and doing odd handy-man jobs.

His name was John, but he always went by Dan or Daniel (possibly due to previous trouble with the law for bootlegging whiskey.) He also alternated use of his last name between Menzie and Menzies.

John "Daniel" Menzies married Pearl Davis. They had four children: Florence Menzies in Oregon (but they lived in Montana for a long time); David Menzies; Daniel Ladd Menzies; and Nancy Caroline Menzie. Pearl Beatrice Davis Menzies died April 1, 1949, in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California. John died in his trailer in Lake County, California, in November, 1970.
