On September 25, 1914, David M. Russell enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Service Number: 24529; Force: Army; Unit: Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment); Division: 13th Bn.). He declared that he was born in Edinburgh, Scotland; that his next of kin was his sister, Ellen Russell (arrived with Rev Fr. Hudson?s group of girls on the Virginian in 1907), who resided at Carsonby P.O., Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was September 7, 1893; that he was a toolmaker; that he was not married; and that he had previously served for 3 years in the 41st Brockville Regiment. He was described as 5 foot 8 inches in height; sandy complexion; blue eyes; sandy hair. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith. He had distinguishing marks of "D. B. and scar of left arm."

Circumstances of Casualty confirms Private David Moffatt Russell died on April 24, 1915 in battle at Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium. He is buried Roulers Communal Cemetery, West Flanders, Belgium. Plot: I. E. 3.
