NotesJoseph Baker was admitted to Barnardo's July, 1891, along with his sister Margaret Eugenie Blanche Baker, born September 27, 1879. Apparently there was another child, Ernest Arthur, born about 1886, who was left in the care of his mother (Caroline Harriet Chambers Parsons Baker). Other family members included: Joseph's father Ernest Baker, (born about 1856) emigrated to Perth, Western Australia in 1890; his paternal grandfather Joseph Baker, (born 1805) was living at 14 Nelson Square, Blackfrairs; an Aunt Pricilla was married to Henry Clawson; Uncle Albert (or Albert James); Joseph's mother, Caroline; and his maternal grandmother, Sarah Parsons, who was living at 36 Stamford Street with her two sons, James and John.

On September 15, 1895, Joseph's sister, Margaret E. Baker, arrived on the Sardinian at Quebec, Canada, along with a group of 298 children accompanied by Mr. Owens en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Joseph lived at Leopold House in East London from July 1891 to April 1892. Boarded out to Palgrave, Suffolk from 1892 to early 1896. In March 1896 he was temporarily moved to Stepney House, East London, from where he sailed for Canada on the SS Scotsman, April 2, 1896, arriving in Portland, Maine, USA, April 15, 1896, along with a group of 148 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Joseph was very much included in his placement family, the Bryans, from Lindsay, Ontario. After leaving the farm he went to Toronto and worked for Richard Parker, the Bryan's son-in-law, eventually marrying Parker's daughter (the Bryans' granddaughter).

On September 4, 1907, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Joseph E. A. Baker, 25, laborer, born in England, son of Ernest A. Baker (mother's name not denoted); and Martha E(mma) Parker, 18, born in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada, daughter of Richard Parker and Amelia Bryan.

Joseph and Martha Parker Baker had two sons.

On April 14, 1916, Joseph Albert Baker, 35, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces (Service Number: 204737; Force: Army; Unit: Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment); Division: 13th Bn.) He declared that he resided at 1914 Lorne Avenue, Saskatoon, Saskatechewan, Canada; that he was born in London, England; that the name of his next of kin was his father, Ernest Arthur Baker, who resided at 9 Maylands, Perth, Western Australia; that he was a loco. engineer; and that he was married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; black hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.

Private Joseph Albert Baker died on December 5, 1916 in France. He is buried at the Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, located at Pas de Calais, France (Grave Reference: II. G. 2.)

Martha Emma Parker Baker Sloan died in 1967, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
