In 1924, Bernard Gibbon, 10, arrived at Fremantle, Australia, in a group of 26 children from the Child Emigration Society, Strand, London, England. He was placed in Hudson Cottage at Fairbridge Farm School, Pinjarra, Australia.

Bernard Gibbon married Freda and they had three children: Elaine Gibbon; Erica Gibbon and Fred Gibbon.

Bernard finally met his sister, Ena, in the early 1990s. An article was written regarding the reunion in an unknown paper in Australia:

"Bernard meets his sister

After 56 years, Bernard Gibbon's dream finally came true.

Mr Gibbon (66) met his sister, Mrs Ena Thorne, for the first time.

Mrs Thorne had flown from England especially to see her brother, who had left in 1924.

Mr Gibbon of Armadale, said that he had only seen pictures of his sister, but he had no trouble recognising her when she arrived at Perth airport.

'We saw them come out of the Customs office and I recognised her straight away,' he said. 'The feeling was indescribable.'

Mrs Thorne, one of seven children, is only the second to have met Mr Gibbon. All of his brothers and sisters live in England.

'He has got so many relatives in England he would be overwhelmed,' Mrs Thorne said.

'Before I arrived he had only seen his eldest brother.'

Mr Gibbon says his chances of seeing his relatives in England are very slim.

'It's a dream that will never come true,' he said.

Mrs. Thorne will fly back to England tomorrow."

Bernard died in 1989 at the age of 75 in Armadale, Australia. He is buried at the cemetery in Fremantle, Western Australia.

Bernard Gibbon is remembered on the Fairbridge Memorial Rose Garden. It is a place where Fairbridge Staff, friends and Old Fairbridgians who have passed away are remembered. He is also remembered on the Fairbridge Memorial Wall.
